For many of us, it’s impossible to think of a world without Mobile Apps. Here at Focus All Media, we thought it would be interesting to throw a little light on the history and the development of the mobile app.
Motorola Handheld Phone
It’s hard to believe today that the first handheld mobile phone from Motorola in 1973 demonstrated by John F Mitchell and Dr. Martin Cooper weighed a staggering 1.1kg.
This new technology back then, often described as a “brick” was very expensive as well and actually retailed at US $3,995. So it was not only cumbersome and pricey but also had severe limitations:
• A limited number of calls
• 10 hours to charge
• 30 minutes of usage time with a full charge
• 30 number storage capacity
As we all know, technology has moved on at an amazing rate and since its conception when only a very few could afford this new invention, most of us would now be literally lost without having a mobile phone with us.
So When Did The First Mobile App Emerge?
Steve Jobs gave a conference speech at the International Design Conference (IDCA) in the summer of 1983 in Aspen. Here, he predicted the evolution of a new digital distribution system where software would be downloaded over phone lines. Jobs saw apps and app stores coming.
Apps emerged from the early Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and one of the first apps was the thoroughly addictive simple game Snake on the Nokia 6110 phone which first appeared in 1997.
2007 – The Launch of the iPhone
However, the more recognisable apps were born in 2007 with the launch of the first iPhone. Here was touchscreen technology where apps dominated. The Apple App Store evolved in 2008 with the first 500 apps. Today, there are millions of apps from games, calendars, banking, travel and health.
Mobile Apps for All Businesses
Apps are important marketing tools and are suitable for all sizes of business. Your website may not be enough now as online activity continues to shift more and more to mobile devices.
They can be used for:
• Customer Loyalty Programmes
• Customer Service
• Sales Support
• Event Information
• Breaking News
• Requesting Appointments
In 2015, the Accountancy firm Deloitte ran a survey to see how many times people in the UK checked their mobile phones and it found that the average person checks their phones 27 times a day.
Deloitte’s Head of Technology, Media and Telecoms Research, Paul Lee said, “The frequency of consumers glancing at their smartphones arguably makes it one of the best value devices available”.
